Yvan Jiang is a London-based interdisciplinary artist and fashion designer who studied at the London College of Fashion and the Royal College of Art. Working primarily with clothing, his practice spans fashion, theatre and dance, exploring the relationships between the body, emotion and space through experiments with silhouettes, structures and materials. His independent fashion work has been presented at London Fashion Week. His costume projects include the contemporary dance work ROOM, the experimental theatre production Great Trauma, which was featured by the British theatre review platform OBSCURAE, and the contemporary dance production Dragon (龙), presented at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He has also worked in womenswear design at JW Anderson and BALLON and participated in an industry collaboration between the London College of Fashion and Peachaus. Across these practices, Jiang remains interested in how clothing can carry emotions, stories and bodily experiences through wearing and performance.

As a participating artist in the Threshold exhibition during the London Design Festival, Yvan Jiang explores the relationships between fashion and sculpture, and between the body and nature, through ALL is ONE. He understands a threshold as a transitional state in which relationships are changing and meanings have yet to become fixed. The two exhibited outfits create contrasts between black and white, rigidity and softness, enclosure and exposure. Natural clay, minerals and metal components form sculptural wearable structures, while soft fabrics take on different shapes around the body. For Jiang, the boundaries between clothing and sculpture are not entirely fixed. Different materials retain their own characteristics while developing new meanings through their relationship with the body. This process of establishing connections and seeking balance while preserving differences reflects his understanding of the exhibition theme.

《ALL is ONE》
ALL is ONE draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese philosophical concept of Tian Ren He Yi, the unity of humanity and nature. Through clothing, Jiang seeks to reconsider the relationship between people and the natural world, translating the cycle of life associated with the Five Elements into a visual language closely connected to the body. In the collection, Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth are understood as elements of the natural world. Botanical imagery symbolises wisdom and vitality, expressing the wish for continued growth; water represents healing and tolerance, reflecting the search for inner balance; and fire symbolises confidence and courage, conveying the strength to move forward through difficulties. Jiang hopes these images can serve as blessings for the wearer, expressing reflections on life, emotion and nature through a visual language that is both quiet and powerful.

The collection originated from Jiang's undergraduate graduation project, in which he sought to translate the philosophical concept of Tian Ren He Yi into wearable forms. He shapes natural clay into components inspired by nature, combines them with minerals, and uses metal rings and straps to connect them with soft fabrics, bringing sculptural structures and clothing together. Clay and metal correspond respectively to Earth and Metal within the Five Elements, while botanical, water and fire imagery is expressed through forms, colours and minerals. Corset-like structures, tops and wrist components are combined with draped skirts, contrasting the defined outlines of rigid materials with the natural folds and movement of soft fabrics. The metal connections serve practical structural purposes while also becoming important visual details, making the differences between materials and their relationships with the body visible.

Looking ahead, Jiang hopes to continue working between fashion and theatrical performance, further exploring how clothing changes in form and meaning when the body is still, walking or dancing. He intends to examine how material weight, rigidity, softness and methods of connection influence movement, while involving costume design more closely in character development and performance. He also hopes to combine his experience in fashion product development with artistic experimentation, exploring the balance between sculptural structures and practical wearability. Traditional Chinese philosophy will remain an important source of inspiration, as he seeks to connect these ideas with contemporary experiences of emotion, identity and the body through fashion, stage costumes and wearable art.
