Week 13|Break the Big Goal into Steps
One Step You Can Stand On
A big goal can give people direction. It can also frighten them.
When a goal is too large, it may stand in front of you like a wall. “Improve my grades.” “Become better at English.” “Prepare for the future.” These words are important, but they are too wide to hold in your hands. If you stare at them for too long, you may feel tired before you even begin.
A large goal needs steps. A step is different from a wish. A wish points to somewhere far away. A step gives your foot a place to stand.
The Apollo program is a good example. NASA records that the Apollo program ran from 1962 to 1972 and included eleven crewed missions, six lunar landing missions, and many goals beyond landing on the Moon, including developing technology and human capability in space. The program was not one jump from Earth to the lunar surface. It moved through spacecraft design, rocket testing, Earth-orbit flights, lunar-orbit missions, landing attempts, and later scientific exploration. Even the Moon had to be reached by stages.
Studying works in the same way. “I want to be good at math” is not yet a step. “Tonight I will understand these two examples and redo three similar problems” is a step. “I want to improve my writing” is not yet a step. “This week I will collect five useful expressions and use two of them in my own sentences” is a step.
Do not be ashamed if your step looks small. A small step is often stronger than a big slogan. It can be checked. It can be finished. It can give you the next piece of confidence.
This week, choose one large goal and write it at the top of a page. Then break it into three small steps for the next seven days. Make each step so clear that you can know whether it is done. A future does not become real all at once. It becomes real when today gives it a place to land.
Source Notes
The Apollo example is based on NASA’s overview of the Apollo program. NASA records the program period as 1962–1972, with eleven crewed missions and six lunar landing missions, and explains that Apollo’s goals included developing space technology and human capability, not only landing on the Moon.
